Happy Easter!!!!

Easter has always been a time for family. Ever since I was a little girl I remember waking up on Easter morning with an Easter basket filled with all kinds of candy, chocolate bunnies, and little toys my mom had gotten for me. Easter has almost turned into a holiday for children because of the infamous easter bunny. Whenever we see an Easter bunny, an egg, or a basket we think of Easter. Although these are nice things to associate Easter with, there is more to this day than we think. Well to start, the Catholic Church celebrates Lent 40 days before Easter. Lent is one of the oldest observations on the Christian calendar. Like all Christian holy days and holidays, it has changed over the years, but its purpose has always been the same: self-examination and penitence, demonstrated by self-denial, in preparation for Easter. Early church father Irenaus of Lyons (c.130-c.200) wrote of such a season in the earliest days of the church, but back then it lasted only two or three days, not the 40 observed today. Lent and Easter are times set aside to think about how Jesus suffered and died to save us. Easter is a day to rejoice for our risen Father. So yes, it is nice to celebrate with easter bunnies and colorful eggs, as long as we dont forget the true meaning of the wonderful Holy Day. Have a happy and Blessed Easter Day!!!!
